Gary Winterton – Downtown Business OwnerExperienced planning commissioner, and lifelong resident of Provo. Parent of three, Stake holder on ”The Wasatch Choice for 2040″ planning project for the Provo Intermodal Hub/Downtown area.
Why are you running?
“I had the opportunity to become involved in our last mayoral race and through that involvement I realized that service is so important and that through community involvement you can effect and improve the lives of others in a very real way. As I asked for service opportunity, a very good friend suggested that I look to serve on the City Council and that was the beginning. I have lived in Provo my whole life and have been involved in our community enough to remember and recognize so many wonderful opportunities taken advantage of and some we have sadly missed. I do not remember a time in my life that I have felt more optimistic about Provo’s future and opportunities. We need to take advantage of those opportunities right now and I want to participate and give back to a community that I love and that has been so good to me and my family.
What is one thing that you believe distinguishes you as a candidate?
“I believe that one thing that significantly distinguishes me is my experience. As a business owner in Provo, I understand the needs of the business community. My business depends on the success of the businesses that I work with so I listen and talk with them on a daily basis about their needs and concerns. I understand the needs of community and neighborhood because I love the people around me and have been loved by them. I have been to almost as many work sessions, study sessions, budget retreats, economic development retreats and council meetings as the council members themselves over the last year. I have developed many great relationships with so many on staff and administrative levels and I feel that I have their trust and confidence. I have spent hundreds of hours in preparation for this opportunity over the last year and I know what is expected and how to do it. Do I have have more to learn? Absolutely! I am very open to that learning. But I confidently say, that no candidate in any council race this year has put more time in preparing themselves for this position over the last year than I. I will hit the ground running and will be in position to continue the momentum I feel building in Provo.
When elected what is one goal you’d like to accomplish?
“If I could accomplish one goal, it would be to help unify the goals of economic stability and neighborhood security. Both are so vital to a healthy community and yet too often business and neighborhood see themselves as adversaries. This is not healthy for a community. We need to work together to develope a heathy and viberant community and I feel I can work with both areas because I understand and appreciate both. I believe we use the vision Provo is developing as a tool and not a weapon. With proper changes and attitudes we can increase ecomonic stability to our community and maintain the feeling of community we all love about our city. ”

Hal Miller – WINNERFormer dean of BYU General and Honors Ed. Active in scouting, served LDS mission to Finland.
Why are you running?
“People whom I know and respect, people well informed about politics and government, asked me to represent our district. Because I am running for office, technically I’m a politician. But I’m not a professional politician, and I have no connection with special-interests groups bent on influencing our city government and its decisions.”
What is one thing that you believe distinguishes you as a candidate?
“My temperament, which makes me ready to listen, open to others’ voices, and thoughtful about possibilities, as well as my tenure in Provo (36 years). I consider myself well suited to join the Municipal Council and there lend a civil and informed voice in pursuing a brighter, sustainable future for Provo.”
When elected what is one goal you’d like to accomplish?
“If elected, I pledge to:
● Listen carefully to my constituents’ voices, including regular contact with Neighborhood Chairs
● Do my homework (informing myself about precedents here and elsewhere in order to consider multiple options)
● Interact with my Council colleagues civilly and responsibly (by speaking to the issues, refining my arguments, and avoiding contentiousness)
● Use “Vision 2030” as an initial context for decision making so as to honor its intent and, at the same time, to clarify and revise it collaboratively
● Adhere scrupulously to an ethic that places others and their well-being above self so that all may profit together”
