As the representative of Provo’s downtown neighborhoods, I promised constituents that I would make our downtown better place to live and work. In my years on the council, I’ve focused much time and energy into this effort and we’ve had some incredible successes.
Working together, here’s what we’ve done for downtown Provo:
- Created business-friendly policies that resulted in unprecedented growth and investment in downtown Provo. Currently, several hundred million dollars are being invested in new construction, businesses, restaurants, and retail.
- Implemented a downtown business incentive program that offers new and relocating businesses tax rebates and reduced fees and licenses, finally making our downtown competitive with neighboring cities.
- Implemented a plan to re-purpose a dangerous vacant building into an urban pocket park for community gatherings.
- Worked with the county to ensure that the new Utah County Convention Center fits with our historic streetscape and is a beautiful addition to Provo’s Center Street.
- Made the downtown area safer for pedestrians by creating new bicycle lanes (100 S.) and allocating funds for long-overdue sidewalk repair.
- Switched our traditional street lights to an LED lighting system that uses less energy and saves taxpayer money.
- Worked with the LDS Church on their plan to restore the historic Tabernacle and turn adjacent properties (including a long-vacant field of weeds) into beautiful grounds. The new temple will bring hundreds of people to downtown every day and will help revitalize the entire area, benefiting neighbors of all faiths.
