About the Joaquin Neighborhood
The Joaquin Neighborhood was built between 1880 and 1940, and is a rich mix of Victorian, Federal, Arts and Crafts style homes. The neighborhood also has an enormous amount of student & multi-family housing because of its proximity to BYU and past zoning decisions by our city government. Part of the neighborhood is a Federally designated historic district. The neighborhood is home to Farrer Elementary, the Provo Academy Square Library, Memorial Park, and Joaquin Park. Most of the density and apartment complexes are located between 500 North and 800 North. The neighborhood is located just east of Downtown Provo, and has some commercial buildings close to that area. It also has a small commercial area located near the intersection of 800 North and 700 East.
Joaquin Neighborhood Meetings
Neighborhood meetings are held at Farrer Elementary, usually on Thursday evenings. We have not had a firm monthly date in the past, but have had meetings as needed. We also use a blog and neighborhood email list to stay connected.
We review development proposals and take a vote, and offer suggestions. We have spent a great deal of time organizing Paint Your Heart Out projects, working on parking issues, and these meetings are also used to allow the neighbors to keep track of what the city government is up to. We regularly invite our C.O.P. officer.
If you care about the neighborhood’s future, the value of your home, and the safety of the children in the neighborhood, these meetings are worth your time. The issues we work on are largely quality of life issues.
